Red Flowering Gums: An Oral History Performance

Red Flowering Gums: An Oral History Performance

On Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May 2015 this play, scripted and directed by Jenny Davis and produced by Diane Pope was performed in the stone barn at Enderslea Farm.

In WA’s centennial year of 1929, photographer Helen Ogden and artist Ida Richardson have just published their very popular book Flowers of Western Australia. Presbyterian Ladies College headmistress Elsie Findlayson Ogden has just had to resign due to her marriage and Edith Cowan is still actively struggling to improve the lives of the widows, orphans and wounded soldiers of World War 1.

Join them as they discuss art, education, social conditions and their lives during this exciting period in Perth’s history.

Enderslea Farm was owned by Elsie Findlayson Ogden after she resigned from PLC in Peppermint Grove. With its large stone barn built by ticket of leave men and the stone well built after the style built by Newnorcia monks.

Afternoon Tea was provided by the Bindoon Country Womens Association in the historic stone barn.

Nedlands Local Studies Librarian Anthea Harris supplied information that was pivotal in developing this Oral History Play. She told me about events that happened in 1929, the Centennial Year of W.A., and also referred me to Glenn Burghall an historian most interested in 1929.
